This talk will examine the changing face of battle during the latter half of the Civil War as trench warfare and battles of attrition began to dominate the American battlefields. Relying primarily on soldier letters and diaries from the war, Sodergren will discuss the issue of soldier morale, while demonstrating how Union soldiers adapted to the changing battlefield and went on to achieve victory over the Confederacy.
