Film Club: In the Mood For Love

“In the Mood for Love” by Wong Kar-Wai
Ranked 24th in the Sight and Sound critics poll of the 100 greatest films of all time, “In The Mood For Love” (2000) presents a seemingly slight plot. Two young couples rent adjacent rooms in a cramped and crowded tenement. Both couples have one partner that works tirelessly and seem to travel. Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung) works as a secretary while her husband’s job keeps him away on extended business trips. Chow (Tony Leung) works as a newspaper editor and his wife is frequently out of town. Li-zhen and Chow try hard to maintain their committed relationships while they become tentative acquaintances. They soon realize that their spouses are having an affair and they develop a halting romance themselves. This is a film that The Guardian describes as “… a profound and moving reflection of life’s fundamentals. It’s a film about yes; love; but also betrayal, loss, missed opportunities and a memory of the brutality of time’s passage.”
